BIO

Dr. Sørensen trained in medicine and clinical specialties in Denmark, completing his MD at Aarhus University followed by doctoral degrees (PhD, DMSc, DSc) in health services research, clinical epidemiology, and science. He is a specialist in internal medicine and hepatology with extensive clinical training and has served as a clinician and academic leader. Since 2000, he has led the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital, developing it into an internationally respected research centre.
 
Research & Impact:
With well over a thousand peer-reviewed publications, Sørensen ranks among the most highly cited epidemiologists worldwide, advancing methods and insights into disease risk, clinical pathways, and the interplay of comorbid conditions. His work on linking registry-based health data has led to influential findings on blood clotting disorders, cancer risk prediction, treatment safety, and epidemiological methods. His research has been published in leading journals including The Lancet, JAMA, and New England Journal of Medicine.
 
Leadership & Service:
In addition to academic leadership, Dr. Sørensen serves as Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Epidemiology, mentors doctoral researchers internationally, and has played a central role in building research capacity in registry-based epidemiology. Henrik Toft Sørensen, MD, PhD, DMSc, DSc, is a distinguished clinical epidemiologist and department chair at Aarhus University, Denmark, where he leads the Department of Clinical Epidemiology. A physician and specialist in internal medicine and hepatology by training, Dr. Sørensen holds multiple doctoral degrees in medicine and epidemiological sciences and has championed the use of routine health care data for large-scale epidemiological research. His work has substantially advanced knowledge on pharmacoepidemiology, disease prognosis, chronic diseases, and cancer epidemiology, with more than a thousand publications in top scientific journals. He has trained and mentored numerous doctoral students around the world and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Epidemiology. Sørensen’s contributions to health data science and population health have earned him international recognition, including membership in the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and Life Fellowship of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. His research has influenced clinical practice and public health policy globally by uncovering critical insights into treatment safety, disease determinants, and long-term outcomes for patients with complex chronic conditions.
